Help us preserve the legacy of pioneering women in aviation by encouraging and educating current and future women pilots, increasing public awareness of general aviation, demonstrating women's roles in aviation, and promoting the tradition of women's air racing!

FLYING IN THE CLOUDS

Are you someone who has thought of flying, but something holds you back? Have you always wondered what it is like to float through the clouds? A. A. Milne said in Winnie the Pooh,

"How sweet to be a cloud / Floating in the blue / It makes him very proud / To be a little cloud"

Meet another racer who loves flying in the clouds, who is learning to not let anyone or anything hold her back.

I fly because I'm told I can't.

"You can't because you're just a girl." "You can't because you're not smart enough." "You can't because you aren't good enough." But, I'll show them. Because, inside, I know I can.

I can fly to escape...the noise, the pollution, the distractions this world brings. Up there, it's the plane and me. I can soar above the clouds in the blue sky and escape the hustle and bustle on the ground. I can feel what it is like to soar on eagle's wings. I can "slip the surly bonds of earth and touch the face of God".

I can fly for the exercise...to stretch my mind, my body, my soul.

I can fly to learn...about the plane, the weather, myself.

I can fly because of peer pressure, to meet women pilots, like me, who were told they can't, and other women pilots who know they can and are supportive and encouraging, racers who insist I experience what they have.

I can fly to overcome… My fear of flying, my fear of falling, my fear of failing.

I can fly for the silence. Up there, there are no horns honking, no people yelling, no one telling me I can't.

I fly...because I can.      K
