Help us preserve the legacy of pioneering women in aviation by encouraging and educating current and future women pilots, increasing public awareness of general aviation, demonstrating women's roles in aviation, and promoting the tradition of women's air racing!

Top Ten Race Numbers Awarded for 2020 ARC

The tradition has been kept.  For more than 5 decades, the Air Race Classic and its predecessor races have held a drawing to decide which teams will start the race. Those who register early, prior to January 31 of the race year, are eligible to be in the drawing for race number 1 to 10.  Many racers opt to purchase a race number, but just as many take their chances to get one of the first 10 numbers.  This year, 18 teams were eligible for the drawing, which assigned numbers using a random generator. The results of the drawing, and all team numbers, are posted on the ARC website https://www.airraceclassic.org/racer-list.htm

Here are this year's Top Ten:

Classic Racer #1 — Borges/Shukiar/Peters - University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, North Dakota

Classic Racer #2 — Gardinier/Daml - Iowa City, IA, Blaine, MN

Classic Racer #3 — Chalker/Evans - Moorestown, NJ, North Wales, PA

Classic Racer #4 — Denby/Myzie - Berkley Heights, NJ, Piscataway, NJ

Classic Racer #5 — Sikes/Rohr - Quakertown, PA, Bear, DE

Classic Racer #6 — Oldham/Westervelt - E. Falmouth, MA, Nutley, NJ

Classic Racer #7 — Larson/Del Favero - Santa Fe, NM, Redwood City, CA

Classic Racer #8 — Bouthier/Bracher - Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana

Classic Racer #9 — McMahon/DeCourley - Temecula, CA, San Diego, CA

Classic Racer #10 — Kirscher/McNicholas - Ann Arbor, MI, Ann Arbor, MI

Volunteers Needed at Enroute Stops

Want to experience the fun and excitement of the Air Race Classic but can't race? How about volunteering at an Enroute Stop? Or the Start or Terminus? If you have previous race experience, you could be especially helpful to the organizers at these airports, but anyone can help. Check out the 2020 race route on the ARC website to find the location nearest you, then go to Get Involved/How to Volunteer or click here:https://www.airraceclassic.org/how-to-volunteer.htm to learn how to create an account (or log in, if you have had an account in the past) and complete the Volunteer Interest Form. Someone will contact you with more information.

Volunteers Needed for Handicap Flights

It takes many volunteers to complete the ARC handicap process, and we appreciate your willingness to help. If you are interested in helping, please contact hcppilots@airraceclassic.org. If you have previously served as a handicap pilot, the invitation to update your Handicap Pilot Profile will arrive in your email shortly. Please follow the instructions in the email to update your profile on your ARC account as soon as possible. We can then start matching you with Race Teams.

Handicap training is mandatory for Race Team PICs and Handicap Pilots. You must attend one of the handicap briefings before flying a handicap flight. All Race Team members are welcome to attend. These briefings will occur in April - plan to attend one of the sessions. Details will be posted on the Handicapping web page.

ARC BLOGSPOT

Got questions about racing? Looking for a race partner? Check out the ARC Racers Blog (http://arcracers.blogspot.com/). In order to ensure some privacy, prospective racers do need to register (create a log-in) on the ARC web site. See the LOG-IN box in the upper right corner of the ARC homepage (https://www.airraceclassic.org/). Visit the ASK AN ARC EXPERT tab to post an inquiry about things like Registration, Teams, Airplane, Start/Terminus Weekends, Route, etc. Check out the LOOKING FOR A RACE PARTNER tab to participate in the dialogue on finding race partners. This is a great way to learn more about the race and to help you prepare for the race in June. We look forward to hearing from you.

Early Planning for your Start and Terminus Weekends

The ARC Start and Terminus teams are busy organizing the events for your Start and Terminus Weekends.  They have recently posted their Welcome Letters  where you will find preliminary information on the ARC hotels for your stay. In the next month, the weekend schedule details will be published. For now, it's a great time to book your hotel rooms to get a start on the process.

START (https://www.airraceclassic.org/event-start.htm) - Start Welcome Letter (S-07) - All racers must arrive at the Start (Grand Forks ND) by Sat Jun 20 (noon Central). As an experienced racer, I encourage racers to arrive on Thu or Fri to give yourselves time to settle in and get your credentials and airplane inspections taken care of in a timely manner.

TERMINUS (https://www.airraceclassic.org/event-terminus.htm) - Terminus Welcome Letter (T-07) - Arrival at the Terminus will depend on many factors (e.g., aircraft, weather). For me flying my Cessna Cardinal, I pretty much plan on a Friday arrival when booking my hotel room at the Terminus. All racers are required to stay through the Awards Banquet on Sun Jun 28.

If you have questions, please contact start.terminus@airraceclassic.org. Stay tuned for more updates in future eFlybys.

Continue the Tradition
